Preparing for the Future: UDC Breed Survey
What is the udc breed survey?
The United Doberman Club (UDC) Breed Survey is a comprehensive evaluation program designed to assess Doberman Pinschers for their suitability as breeding stock. Modeled after the German Dobermann Verien (DV) Zuchttauglichkeitsprüfung (ZTP), it aims to promote the "Total Doberman" – a dog sound in mind and body, with excellent conformation, stable temperament, and appropriate working drives.
The United Doberman Club Breed Survey is an in-depth assessment for Doberman Pinschers, ensuring they meet rigorous standards for health, temperament, and conformation before being considered for breeding. It's a vital tool for responsible breeders to evaluate their dogs and contribute to the overall improvement and preservation of the Doberman breed.
Purpose of the Breed Survey:
Promote the "Total Doberman": The primary goal is to identify Dobermans that embody the breed standard—possessing sound genetics, stable temperaments, correct conformation, and strong working drives.
Evaluate Breeding Stock: It provides an objective and thorough evaluation of potential breeding dogs, helping to make informed decisions about pairings that will produce healthy, well-tempered, and type-correct puppies.
Maintain Breed Integrity: By setting high standards, the survey helps to guard against indiscriminate breeding and encourages the perpetuation of the Doberman's original purpose as a capable working dog.
Educate and Inform: It serves as an educational program for Doberman owners and breeders, providing detailed insights into their dogs' strengths and weaknesses.
What does the Breed Survey involve?
The UDC Breed Survey is a multi-faceted examination that typically includes:
Prerequisite Health Clearances: Before a dog can participate, proof of certain health tests (e.g., hip x-rays, thyroid, eye, von Willebrand's disease (vWD), and cardiac testing) must be submitted, ensuring the dog is free from common genetic health issues.
Conformation Evaluation: A judge evaluates the dog's physical structure against the UDC (modified AKC) breed standard, including measurements, dentition, and evaluation of movement.
Temperament Evaluation: This crucial component tests the dog's character and stability in various situations. It involves:
Being handled and examined by strangers.
Interacting in a noisy crowd with unusual stimuli (e.g., shaking buckets, opening umbrellas).
Demonstrating appropriate protective instincts when challenged by an aggressor, and the ability to calm down once the threat is resolved.
Showing appropriate reaction to gunfire.
Why is it important?
Participating in the UDC Breed Survey demonstrates a commitment to responsible breeding and the long-term health and quality of the Doberman Pinscher breed. It provides invaluable information to breeders, helping them to produce Dobermans that are not only beautiful but also possess the stable temperament and working ability for which the breed is renowned.

For forty-four years I have had the great pleasure of sharing a home with several special Doberman Pinschers, which I have shown, bred, trained, handled, and loved. Currently there are three Dobermans that live in our home. In 2019 we added French Bulldogs to our breeding program and homes. We had the number three Frenchie in the country in 2020. In our limited breeding program, we have bred over seventy-five Doberman AKC champions, multiple Canadian Champions, and multiple Top Twenty Contenders, won the DPCA Top Twenty in 2019, had the youngest Doberman to qualify for the Top Twenty and many other multiple accolades. I have also had the great pleasure during these years of making wonderful friends within the show community. By sharing with this community, I have continued to work for the health, temperament, conformation, and performance of the purebred dog.
In over 43 years as a member of DPCA, some of my activities have included: 1st VP for 4 years, 2nd VP for 6 years, Treasurer for 2 years, Senior ROM Evaluator, Chair of All Top Twenty Events, Chair of the Finance Committee, National Show committee, National Show site committee, National Event Chair, Judging, Breeding, Obedience Seminars, Tracking Tests, Chapter Club Delegate, and AKC Parent Club Conference Delegate. My first National was in 1984, and since 1993 I have attended every National to date. During my terms in office, I attended and contributed to all board meetings.
As an active member of my local all-breed club & specialty club I have served in the following capacities: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Show Chairman, Cluster Chairman of two 4-day All Breed Conformation, Obedience, Rally, and Agility Circuits, Cluster Chairman of two 4-day 990 run Agility Trials, Cluster Chair of the Summer Extravaganza which includes all companion events, Secretary, and Board Member. I am also the past President of our State Federation of Dog Clubs, which is actively involved with addressing current legislation.
Currently I am a AKC Working, Non-Sporting and Herding Group Judge with 2/3 of the sporting group breeds. Professionally I have a degree in Business and Engineering. I am currently retired which allows the flexibility to pursue my love for this sport. My previous experience as a CEO of a small corporation has given me the experience of all aspects of running a business.
