WAE: Sound Mind. Steady Nerves. Solid Doberman.
What is the wae?
The Working Aptitude Evaluation is where the Doberman’s legendary temperament takes center stage. It’s not about flashy obedience or perfect heeling—it’s about instinct, confidence, and the ability to distinguish between friend and threat.
The WAE puts dogs through a series of real-world scenarios designed to test their stability, courage, and judgment. From calmly greeting strangers to navigating strange sights and sounds, and finally facing a simulated threat, the Doberman’s reactions reveal whether they possess the breed’s hallmark traits: alertness, fearlessness, and clear-headedness under pressure.
This isn’t a competition. Each dog is evaluated individually on their ability to recover from surprises and make sound decisions. There’s no requirement for prior training—what we’re looking for is natural aptitude, the essence of a true working Doberman.
Dogs that pass earn the coveted Working Aptitude Certificate (WAC) title, a proud marker of their sound temperament and steadiness in any situation. For breeders, it’s a valuable tool to ensure the Doberman’s working heritage stays intact. For owners, it’s a thrilling way to see their dog’s instincts in action.
And for spectators? It’s edge-of-your-seat entertainment. There’s nothing quite like watching a Doberman size up a challenge and stand their ground.
